Troon = A casual stroll along the shore.  If you're like us, sometimes you need an injection of sanity against the disease of living too quickly.  Rather than running about feverishly to see the next "must see" sight, we far prefer a walk along the waterfront and to enjoy a pleasant pint or two among the friendly locals.  You can enjoy the rewards of relaxation, good food, ales, and fresh, sea air without ever leaving Troon.  Our Flat is located on a small peninsula and is literally a five minute walk into the center of town where you will find excellent restaurants, cozy pubs, and interesting shops.  In fact, one  pub (The Anchorage) is only 25O meters from the flat's front door.  Oh, and of course, you'll also find excellent Golf right here (see the links below)  http://www.troononline.net

Scottish Tourist Boards: Use them!  They are a great source of information and staffed with friendly, helpful people.  This is a link to the Official Scottish Tourism Site: Scottish Tourist Board - accommodation, activities and events in Scotland

This link will get you to a listing of  tourist boards.  It has links and contact information for all the official tourist boards throughout Scotland.  Official Scottish Tourist Boards,Scotland National & Regional Information

Ayrshire and Arran:  Troon is located within this region. Scottish Holidays and Vacations in Ayrshire and Arran

Dean Castle and Country Park:  Located in Kilmarnock this site is only 15 minutes by car from Troon.  For me, this is a must see.  The castle and grounds make for a wonderful afternoon.  The castle is 13th century, the grounds are manicured and there are designated walking paths and children play areas.  The tour of the castle is one of the best there is.  Inside the castle is a fabulous collection of medieval armor, weapons, and one of the best musical instrument collections in Europe.  Touring the castle is by guided tour only and while it would be well worth paying for, admission to the grounds and castle is completely free thanks to the generous grant by the previous owners.  Get there by car or taxi.  Taxi cost varies somewhat but be prepared for about 20 pounds each way. Welcome to Dean Castle Country Park

Dundonald Castle:  I'm obligated to add this to the list simply because of its history.  This was once a very important castle and the Originator of the MacAlister Clan was imprisoned and died its dungeon.  Its only 5 minutes away from Troon in the small town of Dundonald.  http://www.dundonaldcastle.org.uk

Ayr (Alloway) and Robert Burns = 15 Minutes.  The bustling modern and historic town of Ayr is a treasure for shoppers and sight-seers alike.  Take the train or drive into the town and stroll casually along High Street for a complete variety of interesting shops.  Alloway, a small burgh on the South side of Ayr is the birthplace of Robert Burns. Many will know him as the author of Auld Lang Syne and the tale behind the musical  "Brigadoon".   The story was written by Robert Burns and the actual Bridge over the River Doon (Brig o' Doon) is located in Alloway.  Visiting Burn's actual birthplace cottage and strolling along the Brig are are a pleasant way to spend half a day or so. http://www.burnsheritagepark.com

Culzean Country Castle = 30 Minutes.  A beautiful drive south past the "Heads of Ayr" along the coastal road.  Culzean (pronounced Kul aen') castle and country park is a perfect place for a relaxing walk and romantic picnic.  Its a lovely drive but if you talk to the local taxi companies, some have fixed prices for up to 8 people  and will  provide a taxi to drive you there, wait for you for up to 3 hours, then drive you back to the flat for about 60 pounds.  Such a plan allows you to take a bottle of your favorite wine along for your picnic.   The National Trust for Scotland - Culzean Castle and the Eisenhower Apartments

Edinburgh = 1.5 hours minimum.   An internationally renowned capitol of history, beauty and culture Edinburgh is a must see city.  For a day trip to Edinburgh from Troon, we recommend the train.  The train is relaxing, allows everyone to enjoy the scenery, and it arrives in the heart of Edinburgh.  Once there, take a taxi to the Castle, then walk down the Royal Mile to Hollyrood House or walk the main street past the Scott monument for shops galore.  We do NOT recommend driving into the city.  Among other things, Parking will be next to impossible.   Edinburgh and Lothians Tourist Board - attractions and accommodation around Edinburgh.

Glasgow = 45 minutes by car.  If music, theatre, shopping or art galleries interest you, Glasgow is your city.  Easy access by road or rail and easy to find your way around once there.   Welcome to Greater Glasgow & Clyde Valley Tourist Board.

Stirling = 2 hours.  Another fantastic Castle and close by is the battlefield monument of Bannock Burn, site of the now famous (owing to the movie "Brave Heart") battle where Robert the Bruce defeated the English armies in a bid for Scottish Independence.  Stirling is easier to drive to than Edinburgh and is easy to get to on the train as well.  Once there, by all reports, the open-top bus tour during the summer tourist season is THE way to hit the highlights.  Welcome to the City of Stirling, Scotland. Golfing Resources

There are many, many golf courses in the area and throughout Scotland.  Troon itself has an excellent array of private and municipal courses.  The three troon municipal courses , Darly, Fullerton and Loch Green are actually used as qualifying courses for the British Open when its played at Royal Troon Golf Club which, of course, is also here in Troon.  The following are just some links to get you started.
